In the state of Illinois, the village of Oblong belongs to Crawford County and was incorporated in 1883. The town was named after the shape of its area, which was similar to an oblong. The village now has a population of 1,466 people and lies on a total area of 1.12 square miles of which 0.01 square miles is water.
Various artifacts from the oil industry in the Illinois basin are present in the town’s Illinois Oil Field Museum and Resource Center. The museum entrance is free and volunteers at the resource center helps in generating funds for maintenance. This is done by selling souvenirs at the gift shop so visitors can even buy small bottles that contain oil from the Illinois basin, which is now plugged for safety purposes. This museum serves as a great way to learn about the state’s oil boom and history in the petroleum field.
The quaint town sure knows how to have a good time since its bustling with events such as the Crawford County Fair, which takes place in summer. The timing of the event makes it a perfect way to distract oneself from the heat. The event features food stalls to curb your hunger with local snacks and edibles while the crafts stalls have various activities for kids to enjoy. The festivities also include crowning a Miss Crawford County with a line-up of talented young women.
The fall season brings the time to celebrate Fall Follies and the annual Halloween Parade in the town of Oblong. Spectators enjoy a fun-filled day of activities and a parade during the nighttime which is one of a kind in the state. The celebrations include a 5km walk, a pumpkin bowling activity, a delicious breakfast with friends and the flagship spooky parade.
